In the late 1700s, a treaty was signed that opened up the valley for settlement. In 1820, a man named Isaac Love started a furnace and iron forge business, becoming the community’s first business. So the name Pigeon Forge is a combination of the ironworks business that started then and the Little Pigeon River that goes through the town. Beech trees lined the Pigeon River’s banks in the 1700s and early 1800s. As beechnuts were the main part of the diet of the Passenger Pigeons, the river became a natural stopping point for the large flocks of the now-extinct birds.
